Bereavement, retirement and physical ill-health, are just some of the more common challenges experienced in later life, sometimes how we face such problems can contribute to feeling low or anxious.  The aim of the Understanding Later Life Group is to help you understand how changes in later life might impact on your mood and equip you with skills to manage the way you are feeling.  

Courses like this provide the opportunity to recognise that others can have similar experiences as well as different reactions to these problems and this can go some way towards helping people normalise their experiences.  This can be reassuring during some of the difficult times and sharing people’s positive experiences of change can be very motivating in helping us along our road to recovery.  Please do not be put off by the notion of a group experience; you will not be put under any pressure to talk about your experiences if you do not want to.

A lot of people who attend the course are apprehensive at first, which is understandable; however previous patients have explained that by attending the course it helped them to realise that they are not alone in their problems and that the understanding that they have gained from attending has been invaluable in helping them move forward in their lives.

  • Low/depressed
  • Adjusting to later life
  • Lacking in confidence
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Stress
  • Sleep problems
  • Worry/anxiety/panic

What you need to know

What you need to know

  1. You will need a pen, as you will need to complete a questionnaire each week and may want to make notes.
  2. You will need a drink as refreshments are not provided in some of the venues.
  3. You will need to allow time for parking.
  4. Some washroom facilities may be unisex.
  5. You will need to call ahead if you need assistance with wheelchair access or unable to use stairs.
  6. You will need to call ahead if you need visual or hearing assistance.
